What is Fibre to the Premises?

Read on to hear all the benefits to Fibre to the Premises:

Speed and Performance

NBN Fibre (FTTP) delivers internet via fibre-optic cables directly to your premises, enabling speeds up to 1 Gbps or more. In contrast, NBN Copper (FTTN/FTTC) relies on older copper wiring for the final stretch, which significantly limits speed—often maxing out around 100 Mbps in ideal conditions

Reliability & Stability

Fibre is far more reliable than copper. It’s immune to electrical interference, weather disruptions, and signal degradation over distance. Copper lines, especially long ones, are prone to faults and performance drops, particularly during peak usage or adverse weather

Latency & Responsiveness

Fibre offers ultra-low latency, making it ideal for online gaming, video conferencing, and real-time applications. Copper-based NBN connections often suffer from higher latency due to signal conversion and congestion.

Symmetrical Upload/Download Speed

Fibre supports symmetrical speeds, meaning upload speeds can match download speeds. This is crucial for remote work, cloud backups, and video calls. Copper connections typically have much slower upload speeds. .

Maintenance & Durability

Fibre infrastructure is more durable and requires less maintenance. Copper networks degrade over time and are more susceptible to outages and faults

Future-Proofing

Fibre is built for the future. It can handle increasing bandwidth demands without needing major upgrades. Copper networks, by contrast, are nearing obsolescence and will require replacement as digital needs grow.

nbn Fibre Upgrade – What You Need to Know

In short:  If you are planning to stay connected long-term, upgrading to nbn Fibre (FTTP) is one of the best improvements you can make to your internet service.

Why upgrade to Fibre (FTTP)?

Upgrading to nbn Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) replaces older copper-based connections with 100% fibre directly into your home or business.

Key Benefits include:
  • Much faster speeds for streaming, work-from-home and cloud services
  • More reliable connection that is not affected by distance or copper quality
  • Better upload speeds for video calls, backups and remote work
  • Future-proof infrastructure ready for higher speeds
  • Added value to your property, with fibre staying with the premise
The good news:
  • No upfront fibre installation cost
  • The $200 fee only applies if the service ends early
  • After 12 months, there are no fibre-related exit fees
  • You benefit from faster, more reliable and future-ready internet
Why is there a $200 fee mentioned?

As part of nbn’s Fibre Upgrade Program, nbn covers the cost of installing fibre to eligible premises.
In return, nbn requires a 12-month commitment on an eligible fibre speed plan.

If the service is cancelled, downgraded below the required speed, or transferred to another provider within the first 12 months, nbn applies a $200 Early Termination Fee.

Important: This is not a SIMTEL fee. The charge comes directly from nbn and applies across most Australian internet providers.

Why does nbn apply this charge?

Installing fibre involves significant costs, including civil works, new network equipment, and technician time. The 12-month requirement ensures the upgrade is used as intended and helps keep fibre upgrades free for more Australians.

Without this requirement, nbn would need to charge much higher upfront installation fees.

Is this standard across other providers?

Yes. Most major Australian internet providers apply the same 12-month fibre upgrade condition because it is set by nbn, not the retailer. SIMTEL simply passes this on transparently so there are no surprises later.
