Some info on Roxby's 'FTTN' NBN
Roxby's internet is delivered by The National Broadband Network (NBN). NBN have rolled out 'Fibre to the Node' technology, which is what we have been using ever since the NBN was delivered in Roxby. As most people are aware, NBN have also been rolling out 'Fibre' in the streets of Roxby. At some stage later this year, we will be able to order service upgrades and connect to the new Fibre network. Having said that, there will be hurdles to this. To connect to the fibre, requires upgrading to a significantly faster plan, which ultimately costs more. Additionally, you need to agree to a 12 month commitment, or there will be termination charges from NBN. It's obvious, they want some financial return on the infrastructure they're rolling out.
On top of this, connecting to NBN Fibre requires additional infrastructure to be installed in your premises, requiring NBN technicians, that are a limited resource. It's going to take significant time for everyone to be connected to Fibre.
Whilst we absolutely agree that Fibre to the Node is not the 'best' technology, when it's all set up correctly, with no line faults, and you are within good proximity to the NBN Node (the big green boxes in the streets), you can absolutely have a very fast (up to 100Mbps) internet connection, which is often more than most households actually need.
I mention above about the need for FTTN to not have any line faults. One critical aspect that can significantly impact your VDSL (Very-high-bit-rate Digital Subscriber Line) FTTN performance is the presence of bridge taps. Bridge taps are unterminated cable extensions that can cause signal reflections and interference, leading to reduced internet speeds and stability issues. In simple terms, if there is more than one telephone socket in your house, you likely have a 'bridge tap'. As most of the houses in Roxby were built back when we didn't have mobile phones, a lot of houses had a phone in the kitchen, plus one in a bedroom, and even another in the living room, and so on. Sometimes there is even cabling in a wall somewhere, that you don't even know about, as the socket has been removed but not properly disconnected during renovations.
If you are a SIMTEL NBN customer, you can, in-fact, test for line defects using our CUSTOMER PORTAL. Or simply reach out to us via email, or Facebook, and we can test for you remotely.
We are pleased to introduce an additional service that we believe will greatly enhance your telecommunications experience. As part of our commitment to providing exceptional service, we are now offering an inspection of your premises' telecommunications cabling. You do not need to be an existing SIMTEL customer.
Please contact us for more info, and to book a test/inspection.
It is also worth mentioning that a line fault, might not even be present in your premises, and could be out in the street somewhere. In this case, a fault needs to be raised to NBN to book an NBN technician for attendance. As a SIMTEL NBN customer, this is a service we manage for our customers, as we have done many times in the past and had many NBN faults rectified for improved internet performance.
